Weikel Select Point Crown to Kyle Hieber

from Slingshot By Tobias Staff

Having completed one of the toughest mini-schedules in Slingshot history, teenager Kyle Hieber from Langhorne, PA had enough speed and luck to be named the 2008 Weikel Select Point Champion. Starting at Bridgeport Speedway in April and ending at VA’s Shenandoah Speedway in September, the Weikel Select teams made stops at Shellhammers, Greenwood Valley, Oswego Outback Oval and the 2007 Slingshot Track of the Year Oakland Valley Dirt Oval in their quest for the coveted crown.

During the course of the season Gary Hieber was the point leader and then a virtual tie had both drivers looking for an edge in the later races with Kyle claiming the Shellhammers race and Gary experiencing some bad luck at Greenwood Valley it set the table for Kaitie McCardle to find her way into a challenging spot.

Kaitie did just that with 4 solid runs that lifted her past Gary and needing a little luck to catch Kyle. Kyle by virtue of winning the 1st of the Twin 15’s at Shenandoah locked up the Weikel Select Crown but Katie still had to worry about Gary.

Her win in the second 15 lap A Main left Kaitie as the 2008 Weikel Select Points runner-up with Gary Hieber taking 3rd.

The County Roofers 7X driver Dave McCullough from Horsham, PA made the 10 race tour a fun-filled summer as he really made some fans and teams aware of his talents behind the wheel with a masterful second place run at the Oswego Outback Oval to help his 4th place standings. Making the haul from Stroudsburg in the Ted Smith Trucking owned 18A and on occasion 51J was Jake Smith. Jake’s season was beset by mechanical problems which sent Jake to the pits much earlier than expected and relegated him to a final 5th place point tally. Anthony Perrego’s season was shortened when the Montgomery, NY 14 yr. old accepted a ride in a Crate Sportsman at Accord Speedway.

Cancellations at Selinsgrove, Paradise and the 3/8mi Oswego Asphalt oval were the only setbacks for the season.

Point Fund and Special Awards will be presented at the Slingshot Banquet
